13.04: Mate Desktop, Cairo Dock/Docky and Composition Manager
I got composition manager to work with Cairo Dock and Docky in Ubuntu 13.04 running Mate Desktop. After installing Cairo Dock / Docky you need to activate the software composition manager, because it is off by default(!). To do this I went here: System -> Control Panel -> Windows Under "Composition Manager" check "Enable software composition manager". Drivers for the graphics may need to be installed too. New problems appear, dragging out icons to remove them results in a mess where you are not allowed to remove them. Workaround for this is to kill cairo dock, go to your home folder and delete the config. Delete the following folder: ~/.config/cairo-dock Then start cairo again from the menu. Right-click in dock somewhere you don't hit the icons, then in the menu go to Cairo Dock -> Settings. Make sure you are in Simple Mode and not Advanced Mode down in the bottom of the dialog. Then at the top, click Current Items. Now, open the Bottom dock tree and right click on the items you wish to remove and select Remove item (only option there...). Click OK when done.
